Karlovac(ko)

Hello everyone!

It’s been a whole week since my last post. I was very busy with preparing for exams and at work. I have decided to tell you something about my hometown in Croatia. The town is called Karlovac. Many of you can associate at least one thing with this town – the Karlovacko beer.

Another interesting fact is that Karlovac is known as the four-rivers–town with the Kupa, MreΕΎnica, Dobra and Korana.
Karlovac is the administrative center of Karlovac County with a population of about 55,000 people. The town was built by the Austrians in the 16 th century to strengthen their southern defenses and was named for the Archduke of Austria Charles II.
Besides the four-river-town Karlovac is also known as the city of parks because of its numerous green areas.

Some interesting buildings in Karlovac ist he theatre called „Zorin dom“, the Trinity Church, the Pontoon bridge on the river korana and, of course, the Dubovac castle. Karlovac has also a few sister cities and one of them is Kansas City, Missouri.
About Karlovac‘ younger history is to say that Karlovac was one of the citys which was nearly daily bombed during the civil war from 1991 to 1995. In Karlovac, actually in Turanj, one of the settlements, there is a home war museum. Another interesting fact concerning homewar is that some parts of the video of Michael Jacksons „Earth song“ were  made in the destroyed Karlovac.

There are a lot of interesting events in Karlovac – the so-called „Dani piva“ or in English the „Beer days“ which are similar to the Austrian „Kirchtag“ but with the difference that this lasts for a whole week. My favorite event is the midsummer bonfires. This tradition dates back to 1779, on midsummer’s eve on 23 June. Visitors gather on the banks of the River Kupa to welcome the summer with various fun events. At ten o’clock a cannon is let off to give the signal for the enormous bonfires to be lit along its banks.

I hope you enjoyed my excursion to my hometown in Croatia and found out something interesting and new about Karlovac.

See you soon!
